UN backs Lebanon’s military action against armed groups

The UN Security Council has backed Lebanon’s military action against armed groups but urged it to stay out of the conflict in neighbouring Syria, as Beirut vowed no leniency for the “terrorist killers.”
Twenty-two Lebanese soldiers were missing, possibly taken hostage, the army announced, and a military source said 16 others had been killed since the clashes with rebel fighters erupted on Saturday near the Syrian border.
The United Nations Security Council on Monday called on Lebanese politicians to “preserve national unity” and “refrain from any involvement in the Syrian crisis.”
The 15-member Council “expressed support for the Lebanese Armed Forces and the Internal Security Forces in their fight against terrorism”.
Analysts said the violence could be contained in the short term, but warned an aggressive military response could stoke tensions and worsen the clashes, which have also killed three civilians.
On Monday, the army deployed reinforcements and fired mortar rounds at Syrian-held positions in the mountains around the eastern border town of Arsal, saying it was advancing.
Residents fled en masse after the fighting continued overnight.
Prime Minister Tammam Salam pledged there would be “no leniency towards the terrorist killers and no appeasement for those who violate Lebanon’s territory and harm its people”.
In a statement after a cabinet meeting, he also urged France to speed up delivery of weapons for the Lebanese army being purchased under a $3bn deal financed by Saudi Arabia.
The violence in the eastern Lebanese region began on Saturday afternoon, after soldiers detained a Syrian man, Imad Ahmed Jumaa, who the army said confessed to belonging to al-Qaeda’s Syria affiliate, al-Nusra Front.
Rebels angered by the arrest opened fire on army checkpoints and stormed a police station, killing two civilians and capturing several police.
A third civilian was shot dead by a sniper on Sunday.

Ebola drug maker’s stock rises

There is no cure for Ebola. But don’t tell that to traders. Shares of a US-based company working on a drug to treat the infectious disease surged nearly 40% last week.
Tekmira Pharmaceuticals popped on much higher trading volume than usual because investors are hopeful that health agencies in the United States might approve its drug, known as TKM-Ebola.
But investors buying this stock now need to be extremely careful.
Reporters reported Monday that two Americans who were infected with the Ebola virus in Liberia were treated with a drug made by privately-held San Diego company Mapp Biopharmaceutical.
Shares of Tekmira, which were up as much as 26% at one point Monday, gave up all of their gains following the reporters report and finished the day down 7%. Meanwhile, shares of BioCryst Pharmaceuticals (BCRX), another small biotech working on a drug that could be used to treat Ebola, were up more than 5% Monday.
Jason Kolbert, an analyst with Maxim Group who covers Tekmira, said in an interview that it is important to note that the U.S. government is working with several companies on an Ebola treatment. So he was not surprised to hear that Mapp’s serum was used onDr. Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol.
He added that just because another medication was used, that does not mean that Tekmira’s drug won’t eventually prove to be viable.

The menace of Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria will soon be a thing of the past, President.

President Goodluck Jonathan has assured. Jonathan gave the assurance yesterday in Ile-Ife when he dropped in to pay homage to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuade, on the way to the Peoples Democratic Party campaign rally in Osogbo.
The president vowed to rid the country of insurgency and other forms of criminality, saying that his government is building a strong security infrastructure to deal with the country’s security challenges.
He said, “There are certain things we should have done as a government, but because of the situation in the country, we have not been able to do many of them. The kind of embarrassment we are receiving now - will never continue in this country.
“We want to build a very strong Army, Nigeria Police, Navy, and the Air Force so that these rascals called Boko Haram will never stop us because we will surely rout Boko Haram. We are very committed.
“In the next few months, no criminals will ever embarrass us again - in this country.”
The president assured Oba Sijuade that if the PDP candidate won the election in Osun, the federal government will bring development to the state.
Earlier, the monarch had while welcoming the president said both Osun State and the South-west needed federal government's presence the region’s core sectors.
“For instance, in the agricultural sector, cocoa farming, which is the mainstay of the economy of South-west, deserves better attention. In the aviation sector, it would be appreciated if the ongoing upgrading of the Ibadan airport is completed. In the transportation sector, it is high time our railway system was expanded to link the South-west with the South-east through Akure, Owo and Benin,” Oba Sijuade said.
Jonathan also paid homage to the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun.

Ebola: Fashola wants Nigeria borders closed

Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has urged the Federal Government to shut down its borders with affected West African countries to prevent outbreak of Ebola virus in the country.
Fashola on Friday at Lagos House, Ikeja, said Ebola was no longer a local problem, but an international one that required urgent measures in place to prevent its spread.
He said, “This is because it is easily transmittable across the borders and boundaries.
“The Federal Government team has been working with the state’s team. But I think what the Federal Government should do is to consider closing down some of our borders.
“It is difficult to stop this epidemic and we must now choose the treaty obligations that we hold under the ECOWAS treaty and perhaps short term benefits in terms of economic cost to human life. We must make that choice and consider it very seriously. It is a national security issue and I think that we should give it that attention.
“I think that men and women who man our border posts – sea, air and land -especially the customs, now know that they are our first line of defence.
“It is prevention, rather than calling the health professionals to quarantine people, that is really the strongest defence against the virus.”
Fashola said the cremation of the remains of the Ebola victim in Lagos was the best option as dead bodies emitted fluid.
The governor added that all residents who had contacts with the dead Liberian had been tested and that the result proved negative.
“But there is still risk because we heard that a dead body was brought into the country from Liberia. This means that there is still need for vigilance at our border post. The officials at these places should act professionally and report every incident they suspect,” Fashola added.

Ebola: Nigeria’s 1,479 illegal borders may spread virus

There are fresh fears that porous Nigerian land borders may thwart the Federal Government’s efforts to check the spread of the deadly Ebola virus in the country.
investigations revealed that the porosity of Nigerian land borders exposed the country to the risk of the deadly disease.
At the last count, there are about 1,479 illegal routes into Nigeria through which smugglers, undocumented immigrants and terrorists have been infiltrating the country.
Checks also show that port health officials, who are usually deployed by the ministry of health in border points, are not available at many of the unauthorised routes where individuals infected with Ebola virus could access the country without let or hindrance.
Findings revealed that the 114 regular border posts manned by immigration and health officers, were inadequate to protect the country from Ebola virus which could be imported into the country through infected migrants and even documented visitors.
Although visitors to Nigeria are expected to possess the International Health Certificate (Yellow card), investigations show that most foreigners using the international land borders do not have the document.
Investigations by reporters indicated that the Nigerian Immigration Service, with 23,000 workers, and other security agencies do not have the manpower, material resources and capacity to secure even the normal legal and massive borders and prevent infiltration of the country by immigrants infected with Ebola disease.
Thus, infected persons, who do not show symptoms of the virus can easily enter through the land borders as the deadly Ebola disease may not be obvious to the health officials and immigration personnel at land borders.
Nigeria, being a hub of economic activities in the West African sub-region, is an attractive destination for illegal migrants from Chad, Mali, Niger, Cameroun, Togo, Benin Republic and other countries.
Though the Federal Government had issued a health advisory to port health officers and the immigration service personnel,  investigation showed that they were not given enough equipment that could assist them in the task of identifying and isolating infected persons coming into the country.
Ebola is an acute viral illness and often characterised by fever, intense weakness, muscle pain, headache and sore throat.
These are followed by vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, impaired kidney and liver function, and in some cases, both internal and external bleeding.
Experts, including the Medical Director, Clinical Research Physician, United States, Dr. Hezekiah Adesanya, said that Nigeria was at the risk of the disease through land borders.
Adesanya said the Federal Government should set up Ebola quarantine centres at land borders like it did in airports.
He stated that the possibility of the disease spreading through land borders is worse than air and sea ports because more people preferred roads as a mode of transportation.
“Due to the long travel from Liberia to Nigeria in cramped and close proximity, potentially infected people have more time to interact and opportunities to “touch” and therefore spread to co-travellers,” he stated.
Advising Nigerians going through land borders, he said, “Be careful and observe the same care; no touching of anyone. If anybody manifests any of the symptoms, inform the driver, evacuate the bus and get the person to the nearest health facility which is to be isolated immediately.”
According to him, the Federal Ministry of Health should liaise with ECOWAS and the WHO to set up health posts along the ECOWAS highway.
On his part, the Vice -President of the Commonwealth Medical Association and former President of the Nigerian Medical Association, Dr. Osahon Enabulele, said, “Indubitably, there is a possible risk of Ebola Viral Disease spreading to Nigeria on account of the highly active migration activities at all of Nigeria’s land borders, including the active and unrestricted movements of immigrants from afflicted African countries such as Guinea, Sierra-Leone, Liberia and Ghana.”
He called for the re-orientation of the Nigerian border patrol and health staff as well as the strengthening of the disease surveillance mechanisms at the land borders.
Enabulele stated, “The spread can further be buoyed through contact by uninfected persons with persons infected with the Ebola Virus following contact with infected bodily fluids, blood and blood products or the consumption of infected animal meat products by unsuspecting persons migrating through Nigeria’s land borders.”
Also a reproductive Endocrinologist, Prof Oladapo Ashiru, said that the virus could spread through contact with infected blood or infected body fluid, eating infected meat, bush meat or monkey.
He stated, “Some patients may experience rashes, red eyes, hiccups, cough, sore throat, chest pain, breathing difficulty or difficulty in swallowing things, internal and external bleeding. The symptoms may appear between 2 to 21 days after exposure to Ebola virus, though 8-10 days is most common, the average is 5 – 8 days before becoming ill.
“Some who become sick with Ebola virus are able to recover while others do not and the reasons behind this are not yet fully understood.
“However, it is known that patients who die usually have not developed a significant immune response to the virus at the time of death,” he added.
He also advised Nigerians to ensure frequent use of sanitisers, exercise care in contact with bodily fluids, use of soap and sanitiser on getting to the house before shaking hands, and that meat sellers should quarantine their meats for some time before slaughtering.
Ashiru said that sanitisers should be in cars, ladies’ hand bags and around the office places, adding that care should be taken when dealing with fresh fruits.
“Avoid ‘suya’ for now unless you are very sure of the source of the meat; meat and other food items must be frozen and properly stored,” he said.
According to the United States Department of State, you cannot contract Ebola virus by handling money, buying local bread or swimming in a pool.
Another expert, Dr. Rotimi Adesanya, said “Health workers need to make sure they are fully and universally protected by wearing double gloves and safety goggles to prevent any transmission.”
The medical expert said, “People need to get tissue paper, so that when they use it to cough, they throw it away. Handkerchief is not advisable because when they use it, they put it back in their pockets and still use it moments later, thereby transferring it to others through handshakes.
“Hand washing at every point in time is also very important, be it after driving, coming from public places, coming from toilet because hand washing has been found to reduce any form of germ drastically.”
The Federal Government, in a bid to check the spread of the virus, had on Sunday agreed to set up isolation disease centres at international airports in Nigeria.
The Coordinating General Manager, Aviation Parastatals, Mr. Yakubu Dati, had said the Federal Government had commenced screening of international passengers suspected to have the virus.
The National Primary HealthCare Development Agency, told reporters that it had put its workers on the alert to check the disease.
But the Executive Director of the NPHCDA, Dr. Ado Muhammad, in an email to one of our correspondents, said that the possibility of Ebola virus patients crossing land border was very unusual.
The Director, Disease Control and Immunisation, Dr. Emmanuel Abanida, who sent the email on behalf of the executive director, stated, “The EVD runs a very rapid course. That means there’s no luxury of time for infected patients to really roam about borders. That’s the truth.
“Contagiousness is almost at the height of clinical illness and presentation by the infected individuals. Most sick individuals, therefore, may be too weak to crawl the border areas. The possibilities are however that crossing the land borders by patients are possible; this is thought to be very unusual.
“This assumption, however, excludes localised practice of bush meat hunting and consumption, which are controllable through intensified public/community enlightenment in the border areas.”
Explaining efforts of the agency, he said, “Guidelines have been issued to frontline(PHC) workers across the country (especially health workers at the border areas) on the steps to take in early warning signs, surveillance and case management of case(s)/suspected case(s) of EVD.”
The Immigration Service Public Relations Officer, Emeka Obua, assured that the service was collaborating with the Ministry of Health to secure the borders and prevent infiltration by EBV carriers.
Obua stated that NIS personnel at the borders and airports had been issued hand gloves and masks to protect them from contact with infected persons, adding that they are working with health officials who knew the symptoms to look out for in infected persons.
He noted that the men had been directed to quarantine anyone that showed the symptoms of the disease and to limit their exposure to such infected persons.

Want less wrinkles, better immune systems? Try sex

One thing that may continue to be relevant even if other things fail in marriage is sex. It is so important that it sometimes determines the wellness and longevity of some marriages.
As much as it is believed that most men have sex as a form of enjoyment, findings have shown that many women, on the other hand, see sex as more of obligation, thus, it does not take priority in their to-do list.
Even though not all men who have sex for pleasure understand its benefits for their well being and general health, women may not also fare better when it comes to understanding the benefits, thus, sex occupies the back seat in their minds.
A new study by HealthyWomen, a leading health information source for women, has revealed that women who have regular sex will have less wrinkles, more initimacy with their partners and better immune systems. This study however states that only few women recognise the wellness benefits of a healthy sex life.
According to the study, about 51 per cent believe that engaging in sexual activity a few times a week is sexually healthy while just 42 per cent of the women said they believe sexual health is very important to their overall health and about 66 per cent said they only engage in sexual activity once a week or less often.
The survey was conducted online among 1,031 women who reside in the United States, aged 18 and above.
According to the Executive Director of HealthyWomen, Elizabeth Battaglino, many women don’t really understand the physical benefits of an active sex life.
While calling on women to rethink how they view sex and start to prioritise their sexual health and wellness more, she added that beyond the benefit of forming a closer bond with the partner, an active sex life can decrease stress, strengthen pelvic floor muscles, increase immune system function and burn calories.
Commenting on the study, a psychiatrist, Naomi Greenblatt, who specialises in women’s health, agreed with the study, saying while pleasure and intimacy with a partner should be a primary motivation to have sex, the health and wellness benefits are a big bonus.
“There seems to be a growing trend in women having sex for obligation, not enjoyment purposes. Women say there are only 24 hours in the day, and they simply are not prioritising sex,” Greenblatt added.
Most women believe connecting with their partner is the most according to the study, important aspect of their sex life.
A cross section of women who spoke with our correspondent said they did not know that sex has health benefits. While some said they sometimes have sex for enjoyment with their partners, some others said they have it out of the need to satisfy their husbands and boost their intimacy.
“It’s interesting that women rank many factors of their sex life, such as connecting with their partners, as important but aren’t highly satisfied with those factors. Good sex may be the ideal but it is not the reality for many women,” said Battaglino.
A psychologist, Miss Oladele Olaitan, said apart from the child-bearing factor, most women are not aware of the health benefits of sex. She observed a growing trend in women having sex because they see it as a form of duty to their husbands. She added that this could explain why a lot of women reach orgasm during sex.
She said, “From observation, most men place a higher priority on sex than most women do, even though it depends on individuals. It is possible to say that it is a pleasure for men and obligation for the women because women may not be aware of the health benefits of sex.”
The benefits of sex for women are physiological and psychological. It can help reduce stress, give energy, reduce wrinkles, improve intimacy between partners, reduce pain and boost the immune system, amongst other benefits.
A study carried out by the journal of sexual medicine revealed that women who do not have sex more than twice a month fell sick more often than those who have regular orgasm, not just sex.
Another survey carried out by the National Cancer Institute revealed that males who have an average of 21 ejaculations within a month had a 33 per cent lower risk of having prostrate cancer than those who have four to seven ejaculations.
“Sex has benefits for men too. It relieves them of stress and it puts them in a better mood, which can be linked to hormones like endorphins that are released during sex. It also improves the level of intimacy between partners, which improves mental health amongst other things,” Olaitan explained.
A consultant psychologist, Prof. Toba Elegbeleye, said the idea of women having sex as obligation and not enjoyment could not be generalised as it could only apply to some married women. He added that sex might not be a priority for couples who have been married for a long time unlike when they were newly married.
“The major reason for not paying adequate attention to sex and its benefits is because there are other distractions in terms of career, children and other sundry issues. In this age when we have a proliferation of career women, the stress from going and coming back from work militates against sexual interest.
“Good sex has to be totally stress-free and we are having an exponential growth in the number of women becoming career women unlike before, all of which militate against sexual interaction in marital situations,” Elegbeleye added.
He noted that many women do enjoy sex just like men but that it depends on the attention the two partners pay to it and the cultural role women play, which may cause some discrepancies.
“The reason why some women marry are far more than just sex and there are situations whereby women have other considerations for going into marriage even when they do not gallantly enjoy sex, it could be riches, material things and good looks because it is not all women that enjoy sex at the same pedestal as men do.
“There is nothing that keeps youthfulness than staying away from stress as much as possible. Other factors could be access to good food and lifestyle,” he said.
He explained that apart from the reproductive aspect, which is the traditional and cultural usefulness of sex, “it is a form of exercise if engaged in reasonably and without drug, and it fosters a lot of intimacy between couples, particularly when they engage in it reasonably,” he said.

Ghana bans flights from Nigeria, Liberia, others

ebola 20
Following the death of a Liberian victim of the deadly Ebola virus in the country, Ghana has banned flights from Nigeria and other West African countries, according to reporters
The Managing Director, Ghana Airport Company, Charles Asare, said it was part of elaborate emergency measures the authorities were implementing to prevent the virus from spreading into the West African country.
Also, restrictions have been imposed on the movement of Liberian refugees who are still at the Buduburam Refugee Camp in the country.
Ever since its outbreak, the Ebola virus has claimed the lives of over 600 victims in the West African sub-region.
Ghana also bans flight from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
Ghana’s Health Ministry also announced that efforts were underway to establish Ebola treatment centres across the country.
The country’s Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman-Mensah, advised Ghanaians to be patient because government was doing its best to protect the citizens.
“It is worth bearing in mind that preparedness is not an event but a process,” he said.
Though a suspected fever case which was reported at a clinic in Ghana was negative, Ghanaians have expressed fear about the possible spread of the disease in the country due to closeness to the four countries where deaths have been recorded.
Governments in the sub-region are putting in place stringent measures to prevent the further spread of the disease.
According to the health minister, the disease surveillance system in Ghana has been placed on “high alert through intensification of viral haemorrhagic fever surveillance, the field officers are on the alert to pick, package and transport specimens to the lab for confirmation.”
The respective health officers at Ghana’s ports have been given orientation in the detection of cases at points of entry.
“We have activated a system for screening all passengers especially from countries that have recorded cases,” Agyeman-Mensah added. The health minister gave the assurance that his outfit was monitoring the progression of the Ebola disease in West African nations.
But the Federal Government had said that there was no outbreak.
The General Manager, Public Affairs, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Mr. Fan Ndubouke, said that the agency was not aware of such a development.
He said, “We are not aware of any such thing, we have confirmed from Arik Air and Aero Contractors which are the two airlines that fly to Ghana from Nigeria, and Arik has confirmed to us that they haven’t received such notice.
“We are still trying to get Aero to confirm, but I can tell you that from NCAA’s angle, there is nothing like that.”
The Spokesman, Aero Contractors, Mr. Simon Tunba, told our correspondent that Aero had not heard anything like that.
“We have not heard anything concerning such, and have not seen any letter to that effect.”
Efforts to reach Arik for comments could not yield as at press time.
